Present and potential erosion are significant factors for land management and the environmental and economic sustainability of the land. Erosion is classified by type (e.g. sheet, soil slip or gully) and by severity. 'Observed Erosion Severity' type is also classified from 'negligible' to 'extreme'. Note that because of the varying nature of erosion processes, severity may refer to :- percent area coverage of erosion, size of erosion features in hectares, or in the case of stream bank erosion by length and lateral extent of erosion features.
